Interactive Brokers offers several account types tailored to different trading needs and investor experiences. The main account types include:
Cash Account: This account requires you to have enough cash to cover the cost of stock purchases plus commissions. Short selling is not allowed, and cash from the sale of stocks is available three business days after the trade date.
Margin Account: This account allows you to borrow funds to purchase securities, providing the flexibility to trade with leverage. However, it requires a minimum equity of $25,000 for day trading activities. Immediate liquidation occurs if the minimum maintenance margin requirement is not met.
IRA Accounts: These accounts are designed for retirement savings, with specific tax advantages. They can be either cash or margin accounts, but margin accounts cannot have a debit balance.
Portfolio Margin Account: This account type is available for more sophisticated traders and requires a minimum of $110,000 in equity. It allows for real-time risk-based margin calculations.
UGMA/UTMA Accounts: These are custodial accounts for minors, allowing for cash-only transactions.
