One Pip Is Not Always Ten Dollars

The familiar statement that one pip equals $10 is true only for a specific structure: a 100,000-unit position in a pair whose quote currency is the U.S. dollar and whose pip size is 0.0001. Treating it as a universal rule creates wrong position sizes in crosses, yen pairs and non-dollar accounts.

Google's AI Overview correctly organizes the basic definition around decimal convention: most major pairs use 0.0001 as a pip, while yen pairs commonly use 0.01. It also repeats the rough $10 standard-lot example. The useful next step is to show where that shortcut stops working.

For EUR/USD, a 100,000-euro position produces a quote-currency pip value of 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10. For EUR/GBP, the same notional produces £10 per pip, which must be converted into the account currency. For USD/JPY, a 100,000-dollar position produces JPY 1,000 per pip, again requiring conversion for a dollar account.

A formula that travels across pairs

Quote-currency pip value = position units × pip size

Then convert the result from the quote currency into the account currency. The conversion may be direct, inverse or require a cross rate, depending on the account.

Pair Pip size 100,000-unit pip value before conversion
EUR/USD 0.0001 USD 10
EUR/GBP 0.0001 GBP 10
USD/JPY 0.01 JPY 1,000

The table describes conventional examples. Actual retail products can use different contract sizes or definitions. Fractional-pip pricing adds another digit without changing the standard pip: 1.10005 to 1.10006 is usually one pipette, or one-tenth of a pip, not one full pip.

Convert the stop into money

Risk management should start with an account-currency limit, not a round pip target. Divide that limit by the cash loss per pip and intended stop distance, then reduce the result to allow for spread and slippage. Recalculate when the rate moves materially or the account currency changes.

This completes the logic behind the headline. Ten dollars is a convenient example, not a market law. The pip defines price movement; the pair, contract and conversion rate define money.
