Vanguard offers a variety of brokerage account types to cater to different investment goals. The two main types of accounts are Individual Brokerage Accounts and Joint Brokerage Accounts.
Individual Brokerage Accounts: These accounts are owned by a single individual and can be used for any savings goal, such as buying a new home, saving for a wedding, or building an emergency fund. There are no minimum investment amounts to open an account, and investors can hold a range of investment options including mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, and bonds.
Joint Brokerage Accounts: These accounts are shared between two or more individuals. They function similarly to individual accounts but allow multiple owners to share the assets within the account.
Both account types come with no contribution limits, meaning you can set aside as much as you want to build toward your goals. Additionally, there are no early withdrawal penalties, allowing you to access your funds whenever needed.
Opening a Vanguard brokerage account is straightforward and can be completed in a few simple steps:
Choose Account Type: Start by selecting the type of account that aligns with your investment goals (individual or joint).
Provide Personal Information: Fill in your personal details, including your name, email, birthday, social security number, and address. If applicable, also include your employment information.
Add Bank Information: Link a bank account for transactions. You can choose to fund your account immediately or later.
Review and Sign: Review all the information you've entered for accuracy. Create a username and password, agree to the terms, and set up security questions.
Confirmation: After completing the application, you will receive confirmation that your account is open. Your initial deposit will go into a settlement fund, which can be used to purchase investments once the funds are available (typically within 3-7 days).
There are no fees to open an account, and you can avoid the $25 annual account service fee by opting for electronic delivery of documents or maintaining a qualifying balance.
