Broker Balance Screens Need Reconciliation

A broker dashboard is a working interface, not an independent bank statement. Traders should reconcile its balance, equity, fees and withdrawals against exported account records and outside payment evidence—particularly when an OTC dealer is the counterparty and controls the trading platform.

The CFTC's retail-forex advisory is unusually direct: in an OTC transaction, the customer trades against the dealer rather than on a live exchange, and the dealer controls the information shown on the platform, including prices. That does not make every displayed balance wrong. It means the display should be verified like any other ledger controlled by a counterparty.

A five-point month-end check

• Export the full deal, order and cash-transaction history.
• Match deposits and withdrawals to bank or payment records.
• Recalculate realized P/L from fills, not from chart candles.
• Tie financing, commission and adjustments to the published tariff.
• Confirm closing balance plus current floating components matches reported equity under the platform's formula.

Regulatory identity matters here. A brand name, website footer and payment recipient may refer to different legal entities. U.S. customers can check NFA BASIC; UK customers can use the FCA Register. The relevant question is not whether a group has any licence somewhere, but whether the entity on the account agreement is authorised for the service offered in the customer's jurisdiction.

X is useful for discovering complaints quickly, yet an anonymous screenshot cannot establish an account shortfall. Preserve the raw export, timestamps, correspondence and payment records before drawing a conclusion. Social posts are leads; evidence lives in the ledger and the regulator's register.

The workflow ends where accountability begins: if every balance movement maps to a deal, fee or external cash flow, the screen is corroborated. If it does not, pause new trading and ask the provider for a transaction-level explanation. A balance deserves trust after reconciliation, not before it.
