Server-Side Stops Survive What Trailing Stops May Not

A standard stop-loss stored with the broker can remain active when a terminal is offline, while a locally managed trailing stop may freeze. Traders who treat both as identical can leave a pending-order strategy without the dynamic protection they expected after the laptop sleeps or connectivity fails.

Google's pending-order overview surfaced this distinction in its technical warnings. The safer way to use it is to verify the claim in the platform and broker documentation. MetaTrader explains that a trailing stop runs in the client terminal, unlike ordinary Stop Loss and Take Profit levels that are generally associated with the position and processed server-side.

Map each control to its owner

The distinction matters during overnight policy risk. AP reported USD/JPY at 154.81 early September 15, with markets watching the Fed, oil and the approaching BOJ meeting. A trader in Asia may be asleep during part of the U.S. session. If a pending order activates, a fixed server-side stop can provide a defined instruction. A dormant trailing algorithm cannot keep moving the level.

Run a demo test: place the pending order with fixed protection, confirm it appears on another device, close the desktop terminal, and verify the server still reports the order. Test trailing behavior separately. Do not infer production behavior from a tutorial recorded with another broker.
