Swap Charges Quietly Change Weekend Equity

Account equity can change at rollover even when the spot price is nearly unchanged. Overnight financing, multi-day adjustments and currency conversion can turn an apparently flat weekend hold into a smaller Monday buffer.

Balance often stays unchanged while a position is open, but platforms may accrue or post financing according to their accounting method. Once the charge is reflected, equity and free margin fall. If the account is already close to a liquidation threshold, a routine cost can become operationally important.

Costs to include in an equity forecast

The Fed, BOE and BOJ decisions changed short-rate expectations in the same week. Those expectations can influence forward points, but a retail swap value remains provider-specific. Markups, product rules and day-count conventions can produce a debit even when a simple interest-rate comparison suggests a credit.

Forecast equity through the entire holding period. Start with current equity, add a stressed floating loss, subtract expected financing and widen the reopening spread. Recalculate free margin at the end. A trade that looks safe before Fridays cut-off can approach close-out after all four adjustments.

The same check helps separate strategy return from financing. Record spot P/L and swap P/L separately. A profitable direction can still produce a poor net result if the holding cost is large, while a favorable credit should not justify excessive leverage.
