MT5 Trailing Stops Can Freeze Offline

On MetaTrader 5, a trailing stop is managed by the trading platform, so it stops updating when the platform is off; only the last Stop Loss already sent remains active. That operational detail is more important than the promise that a trailing stop “locks in profit.”

Google's AI Overview correctly highlights platform dependency, and MetaTrader's own documentation confirms it. The platform checks incoming quotes, moves the Stop Loss when the position becomes sufficiently profitable and does not move it backward. MetaTrader also states that the trailing function runs in the terminal rather than on the trading server.

What survives a disconnection

Imagine a long GBP/USD position whose trailing rule has moved the Stop Loss to break-even. If the terminal disconnects and the pair rises another 80 pips, the stop does not necessarily follow that rise. A reversal can return to the old server-side level. The trade may close without the profit the trader thought was already protected.

The current central-bank calendar raises the consequence. The Fed decision is due September 16, the BOJ meets September 17–18, and the ECB's 25-basis-point rate increase took effect September 16. A laptop sleep setting, unstable internet connection or platform restart can turn a dynamic plan into a static stop during the fastest part of the week.

Check the platform journal for each stop modification. Test the behavior in a demo account by disconnecting the terminal after the stop has moved. If continuous trailing is essential, confirm whether the broker offers a server-side feature or whether a properly monitored VPS is appropriate. Do not assume that every platform implements trailing stops like MT5.

The practical conclusion is that a trailing stop is a process, not a line. Protection equals the last stop the server accepted, not the level the terminal would have calculated if it were still connected.
