CHF/JPY Is a Haven Cross, Not a Safe Trade

CHF/JPY compares two currencies often described as havens, but the position itself is not “safe.” The cross can react to relative rates, regional risk, funding behavior and policy expectations; those forces can pull in opposite directions and create abrupt reversals.

Googles AI Overview included CHF/JPY in its September cross-pair shortlist and described resistance limiting recent recoveries. That is a time-sensitive chart reading. The more durable structure is to ask why capital might prefer Swiss francs or Japanese yen at a particular moment.

Four questions behind the cross

The BOJ‘s September 17–18 meeting gives the yen leg a known event. The Fed’s September 16 hike adds a global yield shock that can change funding behavior even though USD is not in the pair. This is a reminder that a cross removes a currency label, not the global system around it.

BIS turnover data also argue against casual assumptions. The yen was on one side of 16.8% of global FX turnover in April 2025, while the Swiss francs share was smaller. Those aggregate shares say nothing about the fill on a specific account, but they explain why CHF/JPY may behave differently from USD/JPY during stress.

The phrase “haven cross” can mislead risk management. If both currencies strengthen against the dollar, CHF/JPY can still move sharply because one strengthens faster. A stop should be based on the crosss own volatility, and a long holding period should include overnight financing and weekend-gap scenarios.

OANDA’s September FX outlook offers current yen and global-risk context. It does not establish which haven will outperform; that remains a relative, evidence-based judgment.

The conclusion is deliberately unsensational. CHF/JPY may reduce direct exposure to the dollar, but it concentrates a different question: which defensive currency has the stronger policy and flow support now？ Until that question is answered, “safe haven” is a label, not a strategy.
