What the data showed

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that seasonally adjusted employment fell by 15,800 in July, the unemployment rate rose to 4.5%, participation eased to 66.9% and hours worked declined 0.6%. Full-time employment increased by 16,300, while part-time employment fell by 32,200—one reason the report is better described as mixed than uniformly weak.

Reuters reported that the Australian dollar fell 0.2% to about US$0.7111 immediately after the release. That reaction reflected lower pressure for another near-term RBA increase, although markets remained divided about whether a fourth 2026 hike would ultimately be needed.

A crucial quality caveat

The July survey used seven rotation groups rather than the usual eight, which increased standard errors. The ABS recommends caution with month-to-month changes and says trend estimates provide a better view of underlying behaviour. That methodological note is important: one release should not be presented as proof of recession or a finished RBA cycle.
