COT Signals Are Powerful—and Three Days Late

Conclusion: CFTC positioning data can reveal crowded currency trades, but it cannot show the live FX market. The hook is the lag: the standard Friday release normally describes positions held on Tuesday.

Read the timeline first

Tuesday position → Friday publication → next-session reaction

The CFTC's 2026 schedule lists releases at 3:30 p.m. ET, with September 4 as the next scheduled publication. This means a sharp Wednesday or Thursday move may not appear until the following report.

Better use, fewer false signals

  • Compare several weeks, not a single net number.
  • Match the futures contract correctly to the currency pair.
  • Ask whether price confirms the positioning shift.
  • Label both the position date and publication date in every chart.

A crowded position is a vulnerability, not a timing signal. It can persist while the macro trend remains intact.

YouTube interpretation

CMFX's August 2026 weekly COT review demonstrates how a creator translates the report into scenarios. Its conclusions are not CFTC findings.
