Spot and Futures Limits Follow Different Rulebooks

A limit order in retail spot FX and a limit order in exchange-traded currency futures share a price-control idea, but they do not share the same market structure. Treating the products as interchangeable can lead to wrong assumptions about transparency, queue position, contract size and execution evidence.

CME futures trade on a centralized exchange under published contract and order rules. Retail OTC forex customers transact with a dealer. The CFTC states that the dealer is the counterparty and controls the trading platform information. Some dealers hedge externally, but the customer's contract remains with the named provider.

Same instruction, different evidence

Feature Exchange-traded FX futures Retail OTC FX/CFD
Venue Central exchange Dealer platform
Unit Contract specification Broker symbol and lot specification
Market data Exchange order book and trades Provider quote stream
Counterparty chain Clearing structure Dealer under account agreement
Execution complaint Exchange/broker records Dealer logs and regulator route

CME explains that a limit order remains active until executed, canceled or expired and cannot transact worse than its limit under the applicable rule. MetaTrader notes similar price-bound logic for exchange mode, while OTC behavior depends on execution configuration.

Contract size also changes the risk. A CME Euro FX futures contract represents 125,000 euros, while a retail platform commonly defines a standard lot as 100,000 base units and may allow fractional volume. Margin, financing and settlement differ as well.

This July 2026 MT5 guide illustrates the retail interface. CME's own order-type education describes the exchange side. Watching one without reading the other's rulebook creates false equivalence.

The loop closes at product identification. Before judging a limit fill, write the legal entity, venue, instrument, contract size and execution policy at the top of the review. The word “limit” is only the first line of the rulebook.
