USD/JPY at 159 Faces BOJ Signal Risk

Conclusion: USD/JPY near 159 remains a high-volatility policy rate, not a one-way carry trade. The yen has surrendered much of its late-July intervention gain, while this week's BOJ inflation data and Deputy Governor Himino's speech could reshape expectations before the September meeting.

Verified rate and calendar

Reuters placed the yen near 159.21 per dollar in Asian trading on August 25, still stronger than the multi-decade low near 164. AP reported about 159.40 in a later snapshot. The BOJ schedules Himino's Saitama speech for August 27 at 10:30 a.m. JST.

Trading implication

The U.S.–Japan rate gap still supports carry, but a fast yen appreciation can overwhelm accrued interest. Confirmation should come from Japanese yields, U.S. Treasury yields and official language—not only the spot chart.

⚠ Intervention rumours should not be reported as fact without confirmation from authorities or major news agencies.
