COT Data Cannot Confirm a Live Forex Reversal

Commitments of Traders data can show that a currency trade is crowded, but it cannot confirm a reversal happening today. The reason is mechanical: the standard Friday report usually describes positions held on Tuesday, leaving a three-day gap during which the market may have changed completely.

The CFTC schedules COT releases for 3:30 p.m. ET, generally on Fridays. The September 4 release therefore arrives after the U.S. payroll report and reflects an earlier positioning snapshot. A trader who sees a large speculative position must not assume those contracts remain open after a week of sharp moves in the dollar and yen.

What COT is good at

COT helps answer slow questions. Are asset managers building a position over several weeks? Are leveraged funds leaning heavily in one direction? Is price continuing to rise even as net buying slows? Those patterns can identify vulnerability or trend persistence.

It is much weaker at answering fast questions. It does not cover the full decentralised spot market, and it cannot show what happened after the reporting cutoff.

A complete positioning workflow

First, match the correct futures contract to the currency pair. A long euro futures position is economically related to a short-dollar view, but the chart orientation must be consistent. Second, compare at least eight to twelve weeks rather than one number. Third, place the positioning series beside spot price and open interest. A decline in net longs caused by fresh shorts is different from one caused by longs closing.

Finally, add a calendar note. If payrolls, CPI or a central-bank meeting occurred after Tuesday, write that beside the report. This prevents the most common analytical error: explaining Friday's market with positions that predate the catalyst.

CMFX's weekly COT review for the week ending August 8, 2026 demonstrates how one analyst turns positioning into scenarios. The interpretation belongs to the creator; the underlying reporting framework belongs to the CFTC.
