Yuan Fix Is Not an Executable Bid or Ask

China's daily yuan midpoint is a policy-guided reference, not an executable customer bid or ask. That distinction has become more important with the offshore yuan near a four-year high, because a headline fixing, an onshore bank quote and an offshore trading price answer three different questions.

On September 4, the China Foreign Exchange Trade System set the central parity at 6.7787 yuan per dollar, 20 pips stronger than the prior fixing. The onshore spot rate can trade within a 2% band around the midpoint. Reuters reported on September 10 that the offshore yuan was around 6.705 per dollar and near its strongest level in almost four years after firmer Chinese inflation and export data.

The two numbers are not contradictory. USD/CNY is the onshore market operating within the official framework. USD/CNH is the offshore market, where international funding and positioning can create a different price. A retail bank or broker then adds its own bid and ask around the relevant reference.

Four prices that should not be merged

Price What it represents Can a retail trader execute it?
Daily central parity Official reference and band centre No
Onshore spot USD/CNY market price Depends on access
Offshore spot USD/CNH market price Depends on venue
Customer bid/ask Dealer's executable two-way quote Subject to terms and size

The comparison that matters is the relationship among them. A stronger fix can signal an official preference for stability, while a stronger offshore yuan can reflect global dollar selling or new China-specific data. If USD/CNH moves but the fix barely changes, offshore participants may be carrying more of the immediate adjustment.

How to report the story accurately

Use the pair name and timestamp every time. “The yuan is at 6.705” is incomplete without saying whether the number is onshore or offshore and whether it is a midpoint, last price or executable quote. For companies converting cash, the bank's all-in customer rate matters more than the news headline.

This closes the analytical loop: the fix defines the policy setting, spot prices reveal market pressure, and the bid/ask quote determines the transaction. Confusing those stages can turn a correct macro story into a wrong cost estimate.

A September 2026 multi-pair outlook can help place broad dollar momentum. It does not explain China's fixing methodology, so official releases remain the controlling evidence.
