Check a Forex Account Before You Fund It

Conclusion: The most useful forex-account check happens before the first deposit: confirm the dealer, platform and adviser in the regulator's own database. A polished app or familiar trading software does not prove that the entity controlling the account is registered.

U.S. regulator checklist

The CFTC says about two out of three retail forex traders finish each quarter with losses. It advises U.S. customers to use a CFTC-registered dealer and verify registration and disciplinary history through the National Futures Association's BASIC database.

Check Evidence to obtain Red flag
Legal entity Exact registered name and ID Brand name only
Physical presence Verifiable office and phone Messaging app only
Disclosures Risk, spread, fee and conflict documents No documents before deposit
Funding Traceable payment to the registered entity Crypto-only transfer

Registration cannot eliminate trading losses or misconduct, but it creates identifiable obligations and a disciplinary record. The CFTC also notes that retail forex users connect to a dealer—not a registered exchange—so the dealer controls the prices and spreads shown on its platform.

Account rule of thumb

✓ Match the website domain, legal name and registration record.

✓ Use only risk capital.

⚠ Stop if the person soliciting you refuses to provide a registration number.
