BOJ Signals Put Yen Traders on Event Watch

Conclusion: The yen's calendar risk is concentrated in two BOJ events: underlying-inflation indicators on Tuesday and Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino's speech on Thursday. Neither is a policy meeting, yet both can alter expectations for the next one.

Tokyo-time schedule

The Bank of Japan's release calendar, updated August 21, lists Indicators for Core CPI at 2:00 p.m. JST on Tuesday, August 25. It also lists a speech by Deputy Governor Himino at a meeting with local leaders in Saitama at 10:30 a.m. JST on Thursday, August 27. The next Monetary Policy Meeting is scheduled for September 17–18.

BOJ event Time (JST) What it can clarify
Indicators for Core CPI Tue 2:00 p.m. Breadth and persistence of underlying inflation
Himino speech Thu 10:30 a.m. Current assessment of activity, prices and policy
Next MPM Sept. 17–18 Actual policy decision

What the core indicators are—and are not

The BOJ says these staff estimates remove transitory disturbances and include measures such as the trimmed mean, weighted median, mode and diffusion index. They help diagnose underlying inflation. They are not the same thing as Japan's headline CPI, and Tuesday's publication is not a rate decision.

For USD/JPY, traders should watch whether BOJ messaging changes Japanese rate expectations at the same time U.S. GDP, PCE and Jackson Hole affect Treasury yields.

  • Broader inflation + firmer guidance: could support yen rate expectations.
  • Easing underlying pressure + cautious guidance: could reduce near-term tightening expectations.
  • Conflicting U.S. and Japanese signals: can produce sharp intraday reversals.

These are scenarios only; the speech and data must be published before their content can be reported as fact.
