A “100-pip move” in gold is meaningless until the speaker defines the contract, quote precision and value per increment. Unlike standard spot-FX conventions, brokers and education channels can use “pip,” “point” and “tick” differently for XAU/USD, making copied targets and stop sizes unsafe.
Gold has provided a live reason to resolve the ambiguity. Reuters reported spot gold near $4,469 on September 4 after a 2% rebound the previous day, while prices had touched a three-week low around $4,304 on September 2. The reversal followed changing expectations for Federal Reserve policy and the interaction among the dollar, bond yields and geopolitical risk.
Those verified dollar-per-ounce prices are clear. A social post saying gold “moved 16,500 pips” is not clear unless the author explains whether one pip means $0.01, $0.10 or another platform increment. The cash result also depends on the contract size.
